Description: USS Constitution vs HMS Java December 29, 1812. Less than 5 months after sinking HMS Guerriere the USS Constitution would engage the HMS Java 30 miles off the coast of Brazil.

“Old Ironsides”, under the command of Capt. William Bainbridge, was outfitted with 54 guns, and opened fire on the 38 gun Java at 2:00 pm.

HMS Java’s opening fire damaged the Constitution’s rigging and spars, and Bainbridge was wounded. Additional fire from the Java to the stern of the American ship shattered the helm and killed the four helmsmen.

USS Constitution set the fore and main courses, closed fast on the British ship, and fired a broadside that destroyed HMS Java’s bowsprit cap, jib boom, and head sails. The British frigate’s bowsprit became entangled in the Constitution’s mizzen rigging, and Bainbridge took the opportunity to fire a final broadside.

HMS Java surrendered at 5:25 pm.
