Description:  USS Constitution vs HMS Cyane & HMS Levant February 20, 1815. Following the sinking of the HMS Java, British Admiralty ordered that their warships would no longer engage American frigates unless in a squadron force of two or more.

The captains of the Constitution and men-of-war HMS Cyane and HMS Levant, had no way of knowing that the war of 1812 had ended three days prior to this battle.

Off the coast of Madeira, Spain, USS Constitution encountered the two smaller British ships.

“Old Ironsides” commanded by Capt. Charles Stewart, and outfitted with 52 guns, began exchanging fire with the two enemy ships.

When the heavy gunpowder smoke cleared,The American frigate was sailing parallel to HMS Levant, and delivered a broadside that forced the British ship to disengage for repairs. At that time HMS Cyane was approaching USS Constitution’s stern. In a brilliant show of seamanship and tactics, Capt. Stewart ordered his men on the masts and yards to”back sails”, or sail the ship backward into a position were he delivered a crippling broadside to the British ship.

HMS Levant returned at 8:40 pm. After 90 minutes of pursuit and cannon fire at a range of 50 yards, “Old Ironsides” held up her nickname, and HMS Levant struck her colors a bit after 1:00 pm.
