"Battleships at Anchor in Portsmouth" SOLD

by Brian Coole (English b.1939)

Oil on canvas

Signed lower center on floating barrel.

Description: Portsmouth Harbour is a large natural harbour in Hampshire, England.

It is best known for being the home of the Royal Navy. It is strategically located on the south coast of England, and because it is protected by the natural defense of the Isle of Wright, the British Navy has sailed from there since the Middle Ages.

Coole beautifully portrays a number of 19th century Royal Navy triple decker war ships at rest in the busy port.

This rather large work would be beautiful in a conference room, foyer, office, etc.

Artist Profile: Brian Coole was born in Edgeware, Middlesex, England on February 14, 1939. His parents were Irish, and he has a strong affiliation with the United States.

He is completely self-taught, and claims to be influenced by William Wyllie. In America his work has been compared to Fitz Hugh Lane.

Among his recent commissions have been three historical ship portraits for England’s Royal Naval Museum.

Price: $0.00
