"Velsheda and Ranger Fight it Out"

by James Miller (English b. 1962)

Oil on Canvas

Signed lower right and described verso

Description: This Painting, originated in 2012, is of the J-class yachts Velsheda and Ranger racing at the Solent Regatta in England.

Velsheda was first built in 1933 and raced with the best, including Britannia,  Endeavour and Shamrock V.

In 1937 she was laid up in a mud berth on the River Hamble and not rescued until 1984. She was refitted for charter work and without an engine, she sailed regularly along the English South Coast.

In 1996 she was purchased as a bare hull and underwent a major rebuild including an inboard diesel and one piece carbon fibre mast.

In 1999 she was purchased by Ronald de Waal and since has been racing in the Caribbean and Mediterranean.

Ranger was a J-class racing yacht that defended the 1937 America’s Cup over British challenger Endeavour II 4-0 at Newport, RI.

She was scrapped in 1941.

At Danish Yacht Boatyard, the construction of a replica of Ranger was started in 2002 and completed in 2003. Original designs were used as the basis for the new boat.

Artist Profile: The artist, James Miller, was born in 1962 in Beverley, Yorkshire, England.

His family, sailors at heart, encouraged him to pursue a career in the arts, specifically painting marine subjects.

After attending art college, and discouraged by their attitude towards figurative art, he stopped painting. After that, family and business consumed his life for a few decades.

As time allowed he began his painting once again and his works gained immediate interest in the yachting area near his home.

An avid sailor, with a hands-on knowledge of wind and sea and attention to detail, his works are crisp, clean and precise.

I would compare his style and detail to such artists as John Mecary, William Baldwin and Jonathan Brentham-Dinsdale.

As an up-and-coming artist, I believe that any work by James Miller to be of sound investment and one to be enjoyed forever.
